RECAP: The Amazing Race - "Head Down and Hold On (Australia)"

The Amazing Race is back, which means it's time for these teams to address their UNFINISHED BUSINESS...at least according to the producers. It's not an all-star season, as some of these teams finished in 5th place or worse, and it's not a fan-favourite season either, as at least two of these teams are comprised of people that were nearly universally loathed in their respective seasons. Instead, we're given the subtitle "Unfinished Business"; in other words, these are teams that were eliminated thanks to some stupid little mistake that they made, and this (presumably) is their chance to redeem themselves.

RECAP: Fringe - "Olivia" and "The Box"

I'm behind in my recaps, so I'm just going to do a quick recap of the first two episodes of Fringe before getting back to the one-a-week thing.

When we last left our favourite members of Fringe Division, they had managed to rescue Peter from the alternate universe, but in the process Olivia was replaced with Alterlivia, and Olivia was being held captive by Walternate.

The season premiere, "Olivia", takes place almost entirely in the alternate universe, where we find Olivia in therapy. Walternate has assigned AlterBrandon to head up an experimental treatment that, if successful, will cause Olivia to think she is actually Alterlivia, and therefore bring her over to their side. Olivia rejects their notions that she is actually their Olivia, and she escapes from the facility on Liberty Island (Alterliberty Island? Liberty Islalternate?). She hijacks a cab and orders the driver, Henry, to take her back to the opera house. She manages to convince Henry to do what she says by memorizing the information on his ShowMe card (including his address, social security number, etc.) and telling him that she'll bring trouble to his family if he doesn't help her.

Upon arriving at the opera house, Olivia discovers that she is too late, as the area has just been quarantined by encapsulating the opera house in amber (the same process we saw used on the bus in season 1). Olivia then demands that Henry take her to Massive Dynamic.

On the way, the members of the Alternate Fringe Division (including a severely burned Lincoln Lee and AlterCharlie) corner Olivia at a gas station, but Olivia manages to make a seemingly impossibly shot to blow up a large gas tank, creating a diversion so they could escape. It wasn't really clear why she couldn't have just shot the tank itself instead of the valve on top, but it made for an important plot point: Walternate noted that only Alterlivia could have made a shot like that, since she is an Olympic gold-medalist in sharpshooting, and therefore Olivia's shooting ability is an indication that the transfer of memories is starting to work.

Upon arriving at Massive Dynamic and discovering that it doesn't exist, Olivia suddenly remembers a safehouse, and asks Henry to take her there. They arrive, and she finally lets Henry go. Upon entering the house, however, she realizes that it's not a safehouse at all, instead it's the home of Alterlivia's mother, Marilyn. Marilyn questions how Olivia could have found the house at all if she wasn't Alterlivia, and when AlterCharlie arrives it seems that Olivia has accepted that she is, in fact, Alterlivia. She leaves with Charlie, thanking him for being a good friend. Elsewhere, AlterBrandon explains to Walternate that it must have been Olivia's adrenaline (fueled by her harrowing escape) that activated the transfer of memories.

In episode 2, in the main universe, three men have broken into a house to steal a box buried in the basement. They open the box, and all but one (the one previously labelled as "stupid") are killed by ultrasonic sound waves. Fringe Division investigates the case, and eventually the third criminal returns the box to Alterlivia, who realizes that he survived because he was deaf. She kills him, then takes the box to Thomas Newton (who had hired the three criminals in the first place).

Newton takes the box to a crowded subway station, where it kills several people when a midget opens it and takes it into a tunnel for some unexplained reason. Peter decides that he should be the one to go and disarm the device (Why? Fuck you, viewer; don't ask questions, that's why!), so Walter gets Alterlivia to discharge her gun right next to Peter's ears to disrupt his hearing. Alterlivia, by the way, is still under cover, despite the fact that she acts nothing like Olivia--a fact that Peter has already noticed when she started dancing with him in a bar earlier in the episode.

Peter manages to disarm the device, but apparently the disruption in hearing also disrupted his ability to feel vibrations from a goddamn train coming down the tracks, so he is almost killed. Fortunately Alterlivia is able to save him at the last moment.

In a side-plot, Walter and Nina Sharp are summoned to the reading of the last will and testament of William Bell. Bell leaves a note and a key for Walter; the note reads "Don't be afraid to cross the line", and the key is to a safety deposit box. Upon opening the box, Walter finds 100% of the shares of Massive Dynamic, meaning that he effectively now owns Bell's company.

The episode ends with Peter trying to figure out how the box worked, as he had recognized it as part of Walternate's device from the drawing of fire-eyed Peter hooked up to some huge apparatus. Alterlivia uses the magic typewriter to send a message back to the alternate universe indicating that Peter has the box and is fully engaged. The magic typewriter tells her to start working on Walter.

Overall the episodes were decent. It seems that this season is going to flip back and forth between the events in the two universes, which is a good premise, but I'm hoping they don't drag it out for the entire season. There are a number of stupid elements to the show (like how Alterlivia is making virtually no effort to hide the fact that she is a different person), as well as a few little details that bugged me (like the fact that in the season finale last year AlterCharlie had a buzzcut, and now, apparently less than a week later, he's back to the regular Charlie hair), but they're few enough that I can ignore them to still enjoy the show. I love the disparity between the two Walters; as we've seen in the past, had Walter not had part of his brain removed, he might very well have ended up like Walternate, and that's a really interesting premise to consider. I'm curious to see how Walter will handle suddenly becoming one of the richest, most powerful men on the planet in gaining control of Massive Dynamic.

Until next time, Fringe fans.

RECAP: The Amazing Race - "They Don't Call It The Amazing Race For Nothin!"

The Amazing Race is back, which means we're in for another season of obnoxious Americanism, astounding stupidity, and (hopefully) entertaining challenges that will leave some teams in tears. All in all, last week's episode (yes, I know I'm a week late, give me a break; I'm lazy) was pretty good, although there really aren't any stand-out teams so far. There are a few teams that I like, but I'd be surprised if any of them actually won. Keep reading for the list of teams and a quick recap of the episode.

RECAP: Survivor - "Young at Heart"

I have kind of a weird relationship with Survivor. On the one hand, I can't honestly say that I actually like the show. The contestants are often irritating and/or terrible, and the producers are notorious for manipulating the footage to tell whatever story they want to tell, regardless of what is actually happening (i.e. Russell Hantz being portrayed as some sort of diabolical genius when in reality he's just a bully with a terrible social game who happened to find a large number of poorly hidden Immunity Idols). However, the production values, combined with pretty consistently entertaining challenges and gorgeous locations keep me coming back. This season appears to be no different, as the contestants seem like they're probably going to piss me off quite a bit, while the challenges (if the first one is any indication) will be as exciting as ever. The full recap is after the jump.

RECAP: Hell's Kitchen - "14 Chefs Compete" and "13 Chefs Compete"

It's usually around the fourth or fifth episode of a reality show that you're really able to decide who it is that you'll be cheering for over the duration of the season, and who you'll be wishing would trip and fall into a deep fryer full of boiling oil. Hell's Kitchen is no different, and I've officially got my picks for the season, both for who I'll be cheering for to go far in the competition and for who I think will actually win the thing. More on that, plus the full recap, after the jump.

RECAP: Hell's Kitchen - "15 Chefs Compete"

Hell's Kitchen is one of those shows that I watch and understand that there are very few redeeming qualities. As I mentioned last week, the chefs are typically chosen more for their entertainment value than for their cooking ability, and so you end up with a show primarily comprised of two types of people: mediocre chefs desperately trying to impress Chef Ramsay in an attempt to escape their shitty lives, and actors masquerading as chefs who are only on the show to get their 15 minutes of fame and who don't really care whether they win or not. It gets pretty easy to spot the contestants who actually care about whether or not they succeed as chefs, as they tend to actually apply Ramsay's advice.
The show isn't quite at Big Brother levels of inanity (and don't you worry, I'll be bringing that inanity to this blog soon enough), but there's something about watching idiotic people pretend to be chefs that is innately fascinating. This week's episode was no different from usual, providing us with a healthy dose of drama combined with more than a fair share of stupidity, and rounded off nicely with Gordon Ramsay's patented brand of rage. Read on for the full recap.

RECAP: Hell's Kitchen - "16 Chefs Compete"

It's that time of the year again; that time when 16 wannabe chefs (most of whom are in all likelihood chosen for their ability to create TV drama rather than for their cooking ability) subject themselves to virtually endless tantrums and abuse from chef Gordon Ramsay. This season, the winner will become the "head chef" of Ramsay's new restaurant at the Savoy Hotel in London, England (although not really, as the winners of the show historically have never actually become head chefs, but rather a senior chef working under someone else). After the jump, you can read the full recap.

RECAP: Lost - "The End"

If you had asked me what my reaction to the Lost finale was going to be before I watched it, I would have predicted either mild appreciation or blind fury. After the shitfest that was season 6 of this show, I honestly wasn't expecting a whole lot in terms of satisfaction from the finale. The writers have made a habit of spitting directly in the faces of fans of the show, and there was no indication that they would do any different with "The End." And as predicted, initially I was pissed with the way the show ended. Significant questions were left unanswered, and the explanation of the Side-Universe at first seemed fantastically retarded. However, it's been a day or so, and now I'm left with a somewhat-startling feeling of indifference about the show. How, you ask, did one of the most important shows of our generation end up causing me not to care at all about it? Read on, my friends, and you will see a tale of stupidity the likes of which has rarely been seen.

Internet Goodness: Lost Re-enacted by Cats

This is probably the most accurate re-enactment of Lost that I've ever seen. And it doesn't even need people.

RECAP: Lost - "What They Died For"

After 6 years it's finally coming to an end. That's right, this Sunday, Lost airs its series finale, which will hopefully bring the show to a satisfying conclusion but which will much more likely just piss off anyone who watches. After an amazingly weak season, the only reason I'm still watching the show is because I've watched it for six years and what the hell else am I going to do with only a couple of episodes left. I had hoped the show would finish strong, but until this week's episode it didn't look like there was much hope of that. However (dare I say it?), this week's episode was actually pretty good. I really only had one complaint about it, which I'll get to at the end of the recap, but overall it was well-paced and it answered several of the major questions that the show has been based on. Read on for the full recap.

REVIEW: Survivor Finale

Although I haven't been recapping this season of Survivor, I've been following it since the beginning, and after last night's finale I decided to write a review of the season as a whole. A bit of background information on the season before I discuss the finale: This season was titled "Heroes vs. Villains," and featured a cast of 20 former contestants, divided into two tribes of 10, named the Heroes and the Villains, respectively. The cast featured such famous Survivors as Boston Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, James Clement, and Rupert Boneham. The wild card this season, however, was Russell Hantz. Although Russell was the main Villain of season 19, none of the other contestants were aware of this fact, as season 19 hadn't aired before season 20 began production. In fact, this gave Russell a pretty significant advantage, as none of the other contestants knew anything about him or his gameplay (although there were rumours that Parvati had received some insider information about him prior to the season). Read on for a more thorough review.

RECAP: Lost - "Across the Sea"

It's incredible to me how far downhill this show has gone. Yes, the third season was god-awful, but I felt like the show redeemed itself with the fourth and fifth seasons. This sixth season, however, with very few exceptions, has been absolutely horrendous. The plot is crawling along at a snail's pace, with sporadic episodes in which so much happens it's impossible to get the full impact (last week's episode was a perfect example). It's gotten so bad, in fact, that even when the show finally answers some of the huge questions that it has set up (as this week's episode did), they are robbed of their significance by the knowledge of how awful the show has become. This week we finally learned the background of Jacob and the Man in Black, but aside from revealing this information the episode was not very good at all, and so it took away from the satisfaction of finally getting some goddamn answers from this show. After the jump I've got the full recap.

RECAP: The Amazing Race - "Huger Than Huge"

Well, it's finally over. After 12 legs, The Amazing Race 16 overcame the relatively low standards that it has been setting all season long and actually presented us with a really entertaining season finale. We saw screw-ups, meltdowns, and more asinine behaviour (mostly from one team in particular), as well as some great teamwork and a final dramatic showdown that had been building for a long time. After the jump I'll reveal the winners and give the full recap.

RECAP: Lost - "The Candidate"

With only three episodes left, Lost is currently scrambling to wrap up as many of its loose ends as it possibly can in the time it has. The finale has been extended by half an hour in order to give them more time to do this, but the fact that they've written themselves into a situation that can't possibly be adequately resolved in three episodes (despite the fact that they've known for like 3 goddamn years exactly how much time they had left) means that a lot of the resolutions that we're going to see are going to be pretty sloppy. And that's exactly how I'd describe this week's episode: sloppy. Yes, it moved the plot along, but it resolved a number of storylines in completely unsatisfactory ways. After the jump I've got the full recap.

RECAP: The Amazing Race: "They Don't Even Understand Their Own Language"

Well, this recap is 3 days late, but between moving and starting a new job, I haven't had much time for blogging. Hopefully now that things have settled down a bit I can get back to posting on a regular basis (I've got quite a bit of Internet Goodness for you all, which will start to appear over the next few days). I was wrong about this week being the finale of The Amazing Race (which is a pretty big screwup for someone who professes to blog about TV, so I apologize). Next week is the last episode; I'm not sure if they're going to do a 2-hour finale this year or not (I know, I'm a veritable wellspring of useful information). This week's episode had its moments, from hilarious interactions with locals to meltdowns from two different teams, but for some reason it still doesn't feel like the Race is almost over. I don't know if it's just because the season has been somewhat lame, but I'm just not as into the show as I've been in previous seasons. Hopefully the finale next week will do something to redeem this. Read on for the full recap.

RECAP: The Amazing Race - "I Feel Like I'm In, Like, Sicily"

With only two legs to go in The Amazing Race, you'd think that teams would be stepping their games up a bit and trying to avoid the types of stupid mistakes that they had been making so far. Not so, apparently, as last night's episode featured a number of errors from every team but the Cowboys. I'd like to think that the teams that make it to the end are the best of the best, but since the teams this season have ranged from impressively stupid to borderline retarded, that's not saying much. They're still making asinine mistakes by note reading their clues closely enough, or by not paying attention to their surroundings, or by getting overly frustrated when the locals don't speak English. Read on for the full recap.

RECAP: Lost - "The Last Recruit"

Only four episodes left, and Lost has now shifted from not moving at all to rushing headlong towards the finish line. The storylines in the idiotic alternate universe are converging, and events on the Island are indicating a climactic battle within the next few episodes. Read on for the full recap.

RECAP: Lost - "Everybody Loves Hugo"

Huzzah! Things are actually happening on Lost! The plot is moving ahead! After a mediocre season so far, the last two episodes have really picked things up and made the show at least bearable to watch again. It finally seems like things are converging towards some climactic moment, and it looks like the stupid alternate universe storyline is going to be resolved fairly soon. After the jump, you can read the full recap.

RECAP: The Amazing Race - "Dumb Did Us In"

FINALLY. I'm not going to spoil it right away, but I was really happy with the ending of last night's episode of The Amazing Race. Aside from the part that made me stand up and fist pump like I was dancing on the Jersey Shore, the entire episode was actually pretty good. The Detours and the Fast Forward were entertaining and, if not necessarily overly difficult, at least not mind-numbingly easy. There was still a fair bit of stupidity from some of the teams, and the Roadblock was pretty dumb, but all in all it was an enjoyable episode. Read on for the full rundown.

RECAP: Lost - "Happily Ever After"

It's about damn time this show made something happen. This week's episode, focusing on Desmond, FINALLY started the plot moving again, and took some steps toward a resolution of this stupid alternate universe storyline they've been going with all season. Desmond's always been one of the more interesting characters on the show, but he'd been virtually absent the entire season, so it was nice to see what's going on with him. Read on for the full recap.
