Review: Horrible Bosses

As I've mentioned before, writing comedy is really hard. Evidence of this can be found in the dozens of shitty "comedy" movies that Hollywood pumps out every year; movies with rehashed premises telling the same jokes we've heard a hundred times somehow get greenlit and make millions of dollars, because people are goddamn stupid. If you're going to use an idea that's been done before, you have to bring something new to the table, whether that be in putting an entirely new spin on a familiar story or simply by casting the right people in the right roles. Horrible Bosses falls precisely into this category. Yes, the premise is nothing new, but the cast is fantastic, and they manage to keep things fresh for the entire running time. It's certainly not without its faults, but it managed to keep me laughing, which is all I really ask from a movie like this.
Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day are Nick, Kurt, and Dale, three friends who hate their jobs and decide they need to kill their bosses. Think Strangers on a Train, but more ridiculous. Charlie Day was the entire reason I wanted to see this film, as I'm a huge fan of his work on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (if you're not already watching that show, do yourself a favour and start), and he certainly didn't disappoint. The bosses are played by Kevin Spacey, a psychopath, Colin Farrell, a coked-up asshole, and Jennifer Aniston, a nymphomaniac who inexplicably wants nothing but to have sex with Dale, despite the fact that he's got a voice like a strangled puppy and constantly acts like an idiot throughout the movie. Teaming up with a "murder consultant" named Dean "Motherfucker" Jones (played by Jamie Foxx), they bumble their way through the plot. There are no real surprises in the movie, so director Seth Gordon relies entirely on his cast to get laughs out of the audience, and definitely came through.
As surprising as it is (since I've never seen her in anything that I liked), Jennifer Aniston was the high point of this movie for me. There's something amazing about seeing Rachel from Friends spouting some of the filthiest shit you've ever heard to a stunned Charlie Day, and his reactions are priceless. Sudeikis and Bateman perform about as we've come to expect (with Bateman being the straight man in the movie, and Sudeikis getting the odd laugh here and there, although his inability to resist any woman becomes tiring quickly).
The movie suffers a bit from the fact that there are no surprises; you know exactly where the plot is going and how it's going to get there. Charlie is almost overused; it's like someone realized he was really good at the screamy rants, and so tried to have him do nothing but those. The final act should have been presented in a different order as well; narratively it would have made more sense. These are all minor nitpicks, however, that are quickly forgotten as soon as you think about Charlie dancing in the car while he's supposed to be keeping a lookout, or Colin Farrell (with an amazing combover) saying goodbye to the ladyboy masseuse leaving his house.
Overall, Horrible Bosses could have been better, but it also could have been much, much worse. As it is, the cast saves this movie. If you're a fan of Sunny, you'll like this, and if you're not, then I hate you. Get away from my blog*.

REVIEW: The Social Network

I'll be honest: after seeing The Social Network last night, there's a part of me that couldn't help but feel a bit dirty when I logged into Facebook this morning. Granted, it was an incredibly small part of me that was almost instantly ignored by the much larger, more narcissistic part of me that doesn't care about anything but myself, but there was perhaps a second where I paused to consider the shady origins of the social networking site that I was about to enter. Of course, then I remembered that the view of these origins that I had been presented with was almost certainly completely false, but it is a testament to the effectiveness of the film that I would even stop to think about it.

Internet Goodness: The Best Movie Ever?

I swear to God, they could make a movie of Danny Trejo making a ham sandwich and it would probably still be the best film of the year. This is the (unofficial?) trailer for Machete, the new film from Robert Rodriguez based on the trailer shown in Grindhouse.

Seriously. They just fucked with the wrong Mexican.

FILM REVIEW: Kick-Ass

A good superhero movie is a hard thing to pull off. What comes across as awesome and entertaining on the pages of comic books often becomes ridiculous and/or downright stupid when it gets translated onto the big screen. It’s easy to draw a superhero and make him or her look cool, but when you actually create that costume, you start to realize just how weird it would be to see someone dressed in spandex and wearing a mask walking down the street. Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, based on the best-selling comic book series by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., manages to avoid being ridiculous by playing with just how ridiculous the idea of being a superhero really is.

Movie Preview - Batman: Under the Red Hood (Part II)

A while back, I mentioned the upcoming DC Universe Original Animated Movies feature Batman: Under the Red Hood. The trailer for the movie has just been released, giving us a bit more information about the actual film. Oddly enough, the one place this trailer hasn't appeared yet is on the goddamn official website. Anyway, the trailer is after the jump.

Internet Goodness: Miles Fisher

This song sucks pretty hard, which is a damn shame because this is one of the best music videos I've ever seen. It's an homage to American Psycho, which is one of the best movies ever made (the book is even better, for those who want to feel like they're going insane just from reading a goddamn book). This dude is a dead ringer for Christian Bale, just a bit younger. He can't do the voice, but he has the Patrick Bateman smile down pat. Check it out:

Movie Preview - Batman: Under the Red Hood

I'm not going to lie; there are few things in this world that I'm more excited for than the next DC animated movie. So far, they've been pretty consistently good (although Batman: Gotham Knight was kind of meh), and Batman is clearly the best character DC has. Based on the story arc Under the Hood, we'll see Batman and Nightwing facing off against Red Hood, Joker, Ra's al Ghul, and Black Mask. My pants are getting tight just thinking about it.

The website is here, for anyone else who wants to keep track of this thing like I do.

Logorama

I'm not usually one for short films, so a short film that won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film seems like an odd thing for me to be plugging, but come on. Michelin Man cops chase a criminal Ronald McDonald through a world where everything is composed of brand names and trademarks. There's not a single thing about that sentence that doesn't rock the tits off a giant space babe.

It was directed by Franรงois Alaux, Herve de Crecy, and Ludovic Houplain, and if you don't know who those guys are, well then...I don't either, but it seemed like pertinent information. It's about 15 minutes long, but it's well worth watching the whole thing, as it just gets more and more incredible as it progresses.

Admit it. If you were a giant space babe,
your tits would officially be rocked.

Iron Man 2 EEEEEEEEEE!!!

As a tremendous nerd fantastic badass, I spend a lot of my time scouring the Internet for news about things that are exciting, incredible, or otherwise erotic. I feel pretty secure in saying that Iron Man 2 falls squarely into all three of those categories. Behold, Loyal Readers (of which I'm sure there are only like 2), the new trailer for Iron Man 2:

I want one of those briefcases.
